Dear friends, The Draft Environmental Impact Report was released to the public last week, and we wanted to convey that we are thrilled with the results. The DEIR is available on the City of Piedmont’s website. It is a very lengthy document, but we encourage you to please read the Executive Summary at the very least. You can find the document at http://www.ci.piedmont.ca.us/?p=68.
In the meantime, we are pleased that the review process is moving forward. The DEIR did its job in analyzing worst case scenarios and providing reasonable mitigation measures to address concerns when possible. In short, an alternative suggested by the DEIR that includes the originally proposed large field at Blair Park and adds lights and turf at Coaches Field is clearly very doable and will both provide a great new accessible recreation area for our town and go a long way toward alleviating the shortage of park space that will be available to kids when the lease for field space in Alameda expires. The report does indicate some concerns with the two field scenario (which we think are based on some questionable assumptions) and thus we will be submitting comments and asking for clarification on some of the assumptions to ensure all of the facts are accurate prior to the public hearings in the fall. It also appears the consultant is recommending against the pedestrian bridge in favor of ground level traffic controls.
Comments on the DEIR are due August 9. All members of the public are invited to provide input to the document either in writing or at one of two public hearings. The City will hold two public hearings on the Draft EIR on July 19, 2010 and August 2, 2010 at the Piedmont City Hall Council Chambers located at 120 Vista Avenue, Piedmont, California. The public hearings will begin at 7:30 p.m. Written comments (via email or mail) on the Draft EIR must be submitted to: City of Piedmont, 120 Vista, Piedmont, CA 94611 Attn: Ann Swift, City Clerk or aswift@ci.piedmont.ca.us.
Happy 4th!
